Coupled AES Configuration#
This coupled ICON Earth System Model (ESM) configuration is based on the AES atmosphere, ICON-Land land and ICON ocean components. The AES atmosphere package features a reduced set of sub-grid scale parametrizations due to the targeted km-scale model resolutions (microphysics, turbulence and radiation). In its standard configuration, the model is run with prescribed CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere but, optionally, the full interactive carbon cycle can be activated with CO2 tracer transport and the ICON-Land biogeochemistry (JSBACH carbon or QUINCY) resp. the ocean biogeochemistry model HAMOCC.
This page currently describes a low-resolution test version, the description of the full version is under development.

- Compatible machines and compilers:
Levante CPU (add
--enable-openmpconfigure option for optimized performance)- Recommended resources:
4 CPU nodes
- Estimated runtime (for resources indicated above):
This simplified test configuration (see Description) is numerically stable only for a couple of days. It runs for 3 model days in about 6 minutes.
- Scripting:
Coupled AES mkexp config (add your slurm account
ACCOUNT=<your_account>andEXP_TYPE = AES/coupled-R02B04L90in your mkexp script to run on Levante)- Analysis/postprocessing:
For all models participating in the nextGEMS project, examples, software and recipes for data processing have been collected on the easyGEMS site. See the ICON specific entries there for more information.
Description#
At the time of this writing, only a simple test model is implemented, using 160 km (R2B4) horizontal resolution with a comparably short timestep to compensate instabilities due to the reduced parametrization set. For scientific production, definitions for horizontal resolutions of at least 10 km atmospheric and 5 km oceanic (R2B8_R2B9) are currently under development.
