Compatible machines and compilers:

Levante CPU (intel, gnu, nag) and GPU (nvhpc)

Recommended resources:

Single Node.

Estimated runtime (for resources indicated above):

It takes 20 minutes on one Levante compute node (2xAMD 7763, 256 Gb main memory) to simulate 1 day, for a setup combining MPI for inter-node parallelisation and OpenMP for multi-threading.

Scripting:

LAM mkexp config (add your slurm account ACCOUNT in the mkexp script to run in Levante).

Analysis/postprocessing:

(under development).

Description#

This test case consists of a coarser limited-area model of the ORCESTRA domain (8°W to 64°W and 4°S to 24°N), as presented in https://orcestra-campaign.org/lam.html. The initial condition file was created by remapping the IFS-HRES analysis of 03/09/2024-00h to the computational domain, itself created using ICON’s grid-generator. Likewise, the lateral boundary condition files (latbc_<y><m><d><h>.nc) were constructed by interpolating the IFS-HRES hourly forecasts onto the domain’s boundary cells. Note that 25 “latbc” files are needed, as the model interpolated linearly in time in between the forecast profiles (that is Sep-3nd:00h to Sep-4rd:00h included).

This tests verifies that the model is able to run using a non-global single mesh, effectively using the prescribed boundary conditions to feed the simulation, without resorting to a parent mesh as in the nested configuration.
